Wireless Access
UofT Wireless LAN
As of 2013 all ECE offices and labs are served by the University's centrally-managed “UofT” wireless 802.11n network. All UofT faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and official visitors with TCards may use their UTORid and password to connect. This wireless network was designed for transient short-term connections, and not as a replacement for full-time wired access for desktop computers.
Hints:
- First-time users will likely need to verify their UTORid (even if it works for other services) by using a computer with a working network connection to visit

- Short term visitors (here for up to two weeks) may use the “UofT” wireless network using a temporary UTORid/password combination, which should be generated by the faculty member or administrative coordinator for the faculty member being visited. This can be done quickly on this web page:

- Long term or occasional visitors may not normally be eligible to obtain TCards, but they may be granted one upon presentation of a letter from the Chair’s Office. Discuss details with the department's Business Officer.
- Visitors from other educational institutions that are members of Eduroam should be able to login to the wireless network named “eduroam” using the credentials they use at their home institution. Details about participating institutions is available at http://www.eduroam.org
- This wireless service is not managed by ECE staff, but rather, is managed by the university’s central Information & Technology Services group (I+TS). - Some issues have been reported when users have specific software installed on their laptop computers, notably “Comodo Firewall”. In one case, removing the firewall software, making a connection to the wireless network, then re-installing the firewall software resolved the issue.
Previous System Decomissioned
Prior to the completion of the “UofT” 802.11n WLAN, ECE had operated our own WLAN with network ID “Colubris” and “ECE Secure.” This system has been retired and is no longer available. Use the “UofT” WLAN instead.
No User-Installed Wifi Please
University of Toronto policies call for only official university-managed WLANs to operate on campus. Individual users are not to install or operate their own wireless access points.
