Mathworks Website Logins for MATLAB Access

Each user who wants to install or update copies of the MATLAB software from Mathworks, Inc. needs to create a login on the Mathworks website. Your Mathworks site login also gives you access to MATLAB Online, MATLAB Drive, Mathworks courseware, and allows using the “Get Add-ons” feature in MATLAB to install more toolboxes, blocksets, and user-contributed modules directly within the MATLAB application.

University of Toronto has a university-wide “Full Suite” subscription with Mathworks. This subscription entitles all current students to download and install MATLAB on one personally-owned computer. This personal license is not to be installed on University-owned PCs. See student_individual_license.

The UofT subscription also allows participating units to order Academic or Classroom licenses, for a designated computer or for a concurrent network license hosted on a shared license server.

The ECE department holds both Classroom and Academic network concurrent license subscriptions form MATLAB “Full Suite”. Teaching lab PCs use the Classroom license, installed and maintained by teaching lab IT staff. All Research use of MATLAB uses the Academic network license, managed by ECE IT staff.

Research computing users, including profs, grads, RAs, PDFs, visitors, volunteers, and casuals use the Academic network concurrent license. ECE IT staff install MATLAB on staff-administered research PCs (ECE's “tier 1”). Research users may also install MATLAB on any and all PCs they manage themselves (ECE's “tier 2 & 3”, and personally-owned PCs and laptops, on or off campus), and may connect any number of copies to the ECE shared research license on our network license server.

When you want to install MATLAB on any computer you manage, you will need a login on the Mathworks website to download the installer and to perform internet-based installs. Your login needs to be associated with the appropriate license subscription. See matlab_setup_flowchart

Creating a Mathworks Site Login

To create a Mathworks site login, in any web browser, go to

https://mathworks.com/login

You will see the prompt to log in or to create a new login.

Sign in or create account screen

The first screen at mathworks.com/login says:

Sign in to your MathWorks Account or create a new one.

Email: __________

No account? [Create one!]

Click the “Create one!” link.

Create Account screen

The Create MathWorks Account screen says:

Email address:____________

[i] To access your organization's MATLAB license, use your work or university email.

...

For current students, you CAN use your @mail.utoronto.ca email address and this will associate your login with the university-wide license, and assign you a single personal license, allowing you one install on a personally owned computer.

If you enter an email address ending in “utoronto.ca” the site will automatically redirect you to the UofT Mathworks portal, which uses UTORid sign-on. Current students will be allowed to create their Mathworks site login using their @mail.utoronto.ca email, and their Mathworks login will be assigned their one license for personal use while enrolled.

However, anyone else going through the UofT Mathworks portal – those whose UTORid is logged as faculty or staff, including PDFs – will get a rejection message saying 'you are not permitted to use this license.' The portal sign-up only works for current students, not staff or faculty.

So to register a Mathworks site login as a non-student, you can either:

(A) sign up using an email address that does not end in “utoronto.ca” (including one ending in “.toronto.edu”), or

(B) sign up using a utoronto.ca email address, but bypass the UofT Mathworks portal.

Bypassing the Portal Sign-On, for non-students

If you start the account creation process using an email ending in “utoronto.ca”, you will see this screen prompting you to use the portal:

Sign in from your university's website to gain access to MATLAB

Based on your email address, you already have access to MATLAB through your university.

[Sign in from Your University's Website]

if you do not need access to your university's license, _continue creating profile_

Non-students must click the “Continue creating profile” link, to bypass the portal which would have refused you access based on your status.

Create MathWorks Account screen

Once you proceed on the MathWorks site (not switching to the portal) – either using an email not ending in “utoronto.ca”, or using one that does, but then following the “continue creating profile” link – you reach the screen titled Create MathWorks Account:

Email address:____________

[i] To access your organization's MATLAB license, use your work or university email.

Location: [choose Canada from drop-down menu]

Which best describes you: [choose Teacher/Researcher in academia' from drop-down menu]

Are you at least 13 years or older: [*] Yes

then click [Create]

Once you have filled in all the fields in the form, click Create. The server will send an automated email to the address you registered.

The Welcome to MathWorks! email says:

To complete your MathWorks Account setup, click Verify email

It also shows you a URL you can copy and paste into a browser to do the verification. Do either one.

Once your login is verified, you can set a site password for the account. You can then link the account to ECE's subscription using our Activation Key. Contact ECEHELP to request the Activation Key for our MATLAB subscription.
