+ The ECE department has a new email server up and running as part
+of  the server consolidation project for the ECE research groups.
+The server consolidation project objective is to  have  the  core
+computer  services  managed  on  high-availability  servers, with
+more space  and flexibility  to expand.  User  accounts  will  be
+transitioned to the new server over time.

+ The new ECE email server uses the  industry  standard  model  of
+separation  of user devices and Email server. Client applications
+on user devices such  as  cell  phones,  desktops,  tablets,  and
+laptops  connect  to  the  Email  server  using  a secure network
+protocol (IMAP) to access email. Most of the ECE research  groups
+use  this  model so the transition to the new Email server should
+be smooth. Unix users now reading mail  via very old mail readers
+(/user/bin/mail, mailx, Mail, elm, and mh) should  switch to
+a mail reader that supports IMAP and SMTP, such as pine.
 +
+ The new ECE mail server uses a  new  mail  folder  format  which
+greatly  improves  message handling and performance for users with
+multiple devices. The  new  mail  folder  format  will  eliminate
+conflicts when users are connecting with multiple devices to send
 +and read email messages.
 +
+ Users will be contacted by  the  Computer  Services  staff  when
+their  account  is  ready  to  be transfered to the new ECE Email
+server. You can then add a new account in your mail client on all
+your PCs  and devices  with the mail.ece IMAP and STMP addresses.
+Your mail folders will be copied over  to the new mail server  by
 +our Computer Services staff.
 +
+ Users login name and password on the new mail server will be the
+same as on their existing research group mail server.
 +
+ The new email server is "mail.ece.utoronto.ca" Email  sent  to
+the  users  old email server such as "user@comm.utoronto.ca" will
+automatically be forwarded to the new email server, starting when
+their account is migrated to the new server.  New user accounts
+will start using the new Email server "user@ece.utoronto.ca"
 +
+ The new ECE  webmail server "webmail.ece.toronto.edu"  is set up
+running SquirrelMail.  The  Computer Services staff  will also be
+looking into alternate Web mail servers.
 +
 +
+ An ECE wiki page has been created with more technical details.
